The world's top 32 from the PDC Order of Merit will automatically advance to round two, where they will meet the winners of matches involving the top 32 from the ProTour Order of Merit who haven't already qualified by the main PDC Order of Merit and 32 international qualifiers.

The latter group of 32 will again include two female players, who have the chance to qualify in a UK or a Rest of the World qualifier to book their places at Alexandra Palace.

In addition, the top ranked American player and top-ranked Canadian player from the Championship Darts Corporation will join the North American Championship winner in earning a spot at Alexandra Palace.

Since it was first held at the Circus Tavern in following the much-publicised breakaway from the British Darts Organisation, only seven different players have lifted the world title thanks largely to darts legend Phil Taylor winning it no fewer than 14 times during his astonishing career.

He also won the BDO version twice before the split to make it 16 times in total. Dennis Priestley beat Phil Taylor in the first final before The Power's era of dominance began with eight straight world championships before Canada's John Part famously defeated him in a classic in - much to the bookmakers' relief!

Three more crowns followed for perennial odds-on favourite Taylor before Raymond van Barneveld triumphed in another unforgettable final, while John Part's victory over Kirk Shepherd in was the first time the Stoke thrower failed to reach the final in the tournament's history.

It was also the year the event switched to the Alexandra Palace. A resurgent Taylor claimed back-to-back titles in and before Adrian 'Jackpot' Lewis emerged on the world stage by beating Gary Anderson in the final before repeating the trick against Andy Hamilton 12 months later.

The Power reassured the doubters he could still win world titles by clinching his 14th crown against Michael van Gerwen, who bounced back to lift the trophy in with victory over Peter Wright.

Mighty Mike was the hot bookies favourite to win again a year later but didn't even make the final as Gary Anderson held his nerve to sink Taylor for his first world championship title before repeating the trick in when defeating Lewis.

Van Gerwen regained his status as world champion at the start of when defeating the Flying Scotsman but suffered one of the great all-time shocks in the follow year's semi-finals, at the hands of debutant Rob Cross.

Unsurprisingly the most dominant player in its year history is Phil Taylor with 16 titles - the last of which coming on his farewell appearance in - while Michael van Gerwen and Rod Harrington are the only other players to have lifted the trophy more than once.

The Power hit the first ever nine-dart finish to be broadcast live on UK television during the World Matchplay while he repeated the feat during the edition on his way to a seventh-straight Blackpool title.

The previous year he'd managed an astonishing three-dart average of Taylor's seven-year winning streak from to was ended in when Michael van Gerwen emerged triumphed with a victory over James Wade before winning it again 12 months later.

The Dutchman was favourite to defend his crown for a third time but Taylor had other ideas as he knocked him out en route to winning an emotional 16th title before his retirement.

The final of ended up being one of the most dramatic in the tournament's history, with Gary Anderson clinching the title for the first time thanks to a victory over Mensur Suljovic having earlier hit a nine-dart finish against Joe Cullen.

Wright won the first set against the darts, tapping his opponent on the arm and making comments to him as they went off for the break.

Price levelled the match after the second set and celebrated exuberantly. In the second semi-final, between Van Gerwen and Aspinall, the reigning champion took the first set against the darts, before Aspinall levelled in the second.

Van Gerwen broke again in the third set only for Aspinall to win the fourth set in a decider. Aspinall missed a dart to win the fifth set and Van Gerwen took the lead again, before winning the sixth set 3—0 to take a two-set lead in the match.

Aspinall won the seventh set, but Van Gerwen took the next two to secure his place in the final against Wright, a repeat of the PDC World Darts Championship final.

In the final, held on New Year's Day , Wright held the first set with a 3—2 win after Van Gerwen missed bullseye for a set-winning checkout.

Wright then took a two-set lead with a 3—1 set win, before Van Gerwen broke back in the third set with a 3—0 win, and won the fourth by 3—2.

Wright regained the lead in the fifth and then took a 3—0 win in the sixth set to go back to two legs clear. Again, Van Gerwen broke back with a 3—1 in the seventh; but Wright quickly regained the advantage, winning the eight set 3—2.

Wright went one away from the win with a 3—2 win in the ninth set. In the tenth set, Wright won the first leg.

Van Gerwen missed double for a perfect nine-dart finish in the second leg, but took the leg regardless. Wright won the third leg to throw for the match; and took out double to win the world championship for the first time.

The draw took place on 25 November on Sky Sports News. A total of 28 nationalities will be represented, sharing the record of the edition.

It was also the year the event switched to the Alexandra Palace. Van den Bergh has revelled on the big stage, his dancing feet have delighted the crowds over the last couple of years as he has become a crowd favourite and even in the near empty arena he didn't disappoint.

Every walk-on got the same treatment, as his quick feet dazzled almost as much as his darts. He reached the quarter-final of the UK Open before lockdown, just a couple of months after a second appearance in the World Championship last eight.

Two other individual major last eight appearances sit alongside deep runs at the World Cup with Belgium - the man has got game.

In reaching the last four at the World Matchplay, he ended his quarter-final misery and in truth went from strength to strength as the tournament went on.

That was clearly evident as he powered to the finishing line against the proven pedigree of Anderson. In reaching his only other final at the German Darts Masters in , Van den Bergh beat Michael van Gerwen and Gary Anderson before losing to Mesnur Suljovic, so the signs have been there and during a week on a Milton Keynes retail park, it all came together.

Sky Sports' Mark Webster cited the different nature of Van den Bergh's victories in his run to the final as evidence of the Belgian's coming of age, and the list of vanquished opponents was quite something.

He led, he was dominant, he had to repel comeback, he was caught and composed him and in his final, he was simply the better player.

Life in the Milton Keynes bubble has meant one or two changes, one of which was being able to see the players practice. In contrast to Anderson's typically phlegmatic arrival at the venue, Van den Bergh would arrive with rucksack, air pods and a bobbing head, not too dissimilar to a Premier League footballer.

The fun would soon subside; Van den Bergh is a cool calm presence on the oche and once settled into the practice area the focus descends.
